First of all, a brief description of what taxidermy means is necessary: Taxidermy is a general term which describes the numerous methods of reproducing a life-like representation of an animal for permanent display. In some cases, the skin ( including the fur, feathers or scales ) of the specimen is preserved and installed over an synthetic armature. In other cases, the specimen is reproduced entirely with manmade materials.
The word comes from two ancient Greek words as follows: “taxis” which means movement and “derma” which means skin. Therefore taxidermy means the movement of the skin. This definition is a fairly appropriate one as many taxidermy procedures involve removing the specimen’s natural skin, replacing the skin over an artificial body and adjusting the skin until it has a lifelike appearance.
Today’s taxidermy techniques involve many crafts such as carpentry, tanning, molding casting and also carpentry. All these but no talent at sculpture, painting or drawing are useless as you can’t do a good job with no talent, no matter you master the techniques. Nowadays, some taxidermy mounts don’t contain any animal parts at all as they are completely recreated with manmade materials. These works of taxidermy are displayed in museums, restaurants but also in educational institutions or personal homes.
