In the past, people used the 6x-10x scopes for coon hunts but things have changed since then. We don’t recommend any precise power levels for any type of application because there are sensible magnification ranges and within these limits a hunter can find both variable and fixed-power scopes. However, experienced hunters recommend using a 8x or 10x power scope for raccoon hunting activities. The most fundamental decision a coon hunter has to make is choosing the right power, to be more exact, how much magnification he needs.
A regular fixed 4x scope is efficient not only for coon hunting but for other types of hunting as well. On the other hand, more magnification can bring better results. In western coon hunting, people have constant and annoying problems with mirage and heat waves so in many cases it is almost impossible to use the full capability of these scopes. In the early hours of the day when all is calm and cool, the hunter can turn the power all the way up but when the heat weaves come up they will distort the target that is why lowering the power is recommended.
Keep in mind that if you shoot with a scope with only one eye open, then a 4x may be a little bit too much at close range. At medium distance the added power is perfect and at longer ranges it is ideal. Moving on to the tubes and objectives aspect, for many years the 1” tub has been very popular among coon hunters in the United States but things have changed as the 30mm tube is gaining more and more popularity among coon enthusiasts. For coon hunting, a 30mm tube will bring more useable light in comparison with a 1” model.
The larger tubes offer a greater range of adjustment but they have an important downside, they are heavy. The function of a reticule is not only to aim precisely but also to draw the hunter’s eye to the scope’s center and onto the aiming point. The most efficient reticule is most likely a very fine crosshair which is excellent for varmint hunters, especially for a coon enthusiast.
Of course, when considering to purchase a scope a hunter must take into consideration the rifle on which he will install the scope. Some of the most efficient coon rifles are the Savage Varmint series or the Mauser CZ 527. Installing a suitable power scope on such a rifle will greatly improve the hunter’s aiming capabilities.
